Canine Clones
I have to say, I’m rather divided on this issue. On the one hand, this is selective breeding down to a fine art – these puppies will have the traits of their predecessor and perhaps will go on to save many lives.
On the other hand, we’re talking a bit about ‘playing God’ – it’s not breeding through ‘normal’ practices, it’s actively selecting the genes you want in order to create the ‘perfect pup’.
And if we’re doing it with sheep, dogs and other animals…well it’s unlikely that they’re going to stop at cloning humans regardless of what the law may be. Designer babies of the future perhaps?
Bit of a moral/ethical issue this one. An intensely grey area. However, since the puppies are already here, I wish them long, healthy lives and hope they make their ‘father’ proud.
