Guess what the stork brought us?

So last weekend we had a new arrival come home. She was pudgy and wrinkly and beautiful and orange. Well sort of a reddy, ginger, orange. No,it’s not the baby of a tellytubby. She is infact a rescue pupster. More accurately a Dogue De Bordeaux. We have been told that she is around 2 years old and an ex breeding bitch who was hogtied and subjected to forced mating so that some horrible backyard breeders could make a profit from the puppies. She also seems to have lost some of ...

If your dog is fat…FEED IT LESS!

I saw on the news recently that the animal charity, PDSA, have stated that nowadays, 1 in 3 dogs are overweight or obese due to owners overfeeding them. One dog that was mentioned is so overweight that he is now unable to walk.
Listen up people! As kind as you think you are being to your dog, feeding him your last sausage as if it were your last rolo is not doing him any favours! You are actually being rather cruel. Especially when these hounds aren’t getting enough exercise ...

So the weather has turned beautiful again and to celebrate we decided to have a belated birthday for my sister and sort of housewarming for us.
We had around 20 guests, 8 of which were of the canine persuasion and some of whom had never met before.
To give you a breed run down:
3 Collies, 1 Newfie x, 1 Mastiff x, 1 complete mix up (we think collie whippet…), 1 Labrador and 1 Mini Schnau.
They were little stars all day! We had a couple of small grizzles when they all got far ...

Do you speak Dog?

The other day, whilst out walking my two nutters, we happened upon a lady and a little girl with their german shepherd puppy (on a guess about 6-8mths old) and a Jack Russell.
As soon as her german shepherd spied my two, he began barking and whining and pulling on the lead to get to them.
We walked straight past as my older boy can be a little funny with dogs who get a bit exuberant and carried on throwing the ball as normal (we always have a ball on us as ...

The Importance of Bite Inhibition

When you first get a puppy, one of the main things you learn is that puppies like to mouth and play bite. It is part of their natural behaviour - so what’s the problem? It doesn’t even hurt that much really. So we don’t need to teach them bite inhibition right? WRONG.
As renowned behaviourist Ian Dunbar states ‘teaching bite inhibition is the most important aspect of your puppy’s entire education.’ (Dunbar, 2007-2010) This is supported by another expert in the field, Karen Pryor, who confirms ‘If you teach your ...

Adult Dog Socialisation…can’t be that important…can it?

The first thing any reputable rescue, trainer, behaviourist, vet or indeed any good breeder will tell you when you first bring home your puppy is that socialisation is incredibly important. They need to get used to lots of strange people, dogs and situations…and even ’scary’ objects such as bikes, hats, large coats and so on.
And being puppies, they tend to absorb everything like a sponge and can learn very quickly that lots of different people, children, adults, grandparents mean more treats and cuddles and aren’t very scary at all. Going ...
